COLLEGE PLANNING: During the 10th grade, you’ll want to stay on track with your high school classes and activities and begin to narrow down the plan for your future.
FALL ---Take the Pre-ACT (October). All NC 10th graders are required to take the Pre-ACT. ---Stay on track with your academic coursework--take challenging classes to the best of your ability ---Begin learning about the college admission process. --Understanding calculating your Grade Point Average --What information is on your transcript --Understanding college entrance requirements ---Continue to explore your career interests and goals by researching various websites and participating in Seminar activities. Continue attending LUNCH programs in the areas you have an interest.
WINTER --Stay involved or get involved in other activities (clubs, organizations, service, teams--in or outside of school). Consider working towards a leadership role or taking on additional responsibilities. ---Continue developing your reading and writing skills. Consider reading the newspaper or professional articles weekly. Use your Pre-ACT Score report to improve on the skills recommended to improve your score. ---Review your course options for 11th grade. Consider all of your options and ask your teachers what they would recommend. Review the High School Course Guide for course and program related information. Again, review your Pre-ACT score for appropriate AP Placement. --Register to take the PSAT 10, the practice SAT.
SPRING ---Keep your grades up and stay focused on your academic goals. ---Begin your college search. Keep in mind the list of criteria you have been developing to find a good college match. Use the various search tools available (see below) for learning about the different college campuses and programs. ---Begin creating your "prospective student profile" through the colleges you have a strong interest in. ---Consider taking SAT Subject Tests for any of the courses you complete this year. --Meet with your counselor to discuss your course options for 11th grade and your goals (career and academic). There are numerous programs available to 11th grade students that haven't been in the past (IB, College & Career Promise, Middle College). --Summer-- get a summer job, participate in service, volunteering or enrichment program.
